In 1980 Datuk Stephen Wan Ullok, a native Sarawakian from the ethnic group of the Kenyah, established Telang Usan Travel & Tours. His vision was to showcase the heritage and traditions of the natives of Sarawak to the world. And by doing so, he hoped to foster interest and pride amongst his fellow Sarawakians, especially the next generation, to preserve their heritage and keep old traditions alive.
Nine years later, Datuk Stephen Wan Ullok also opened the Telang Usan Hotel in Kuching. The Telang Usan Hotel was created with a vision in mind - to operate a hotel whose service reflected the friendly culture of Sarawak, that showcased authentic Orang Ulu art & decor while, conforming to international hoteliers' standards of comfort and cleanliness.
Telang Usan Hotel also aims to be a hotel and travel business that creates job opportunities for Sarawakians, offering the opportunity to train and familiarise them to the demanding standards of professionalism in the Tourism & Hospitality industry.
The name ‘Telang Usan’ refers to Datuk Stephen Wan Ullok’s birth place in the interior of Borneo. Telang Usan Travel & Tours as well as Telang Usan Hotel is still owned and run by the Wan Ullok family until today.
